OP is in the sales business, working on a commission basis. The products are niche, appealing to a select customer base. But sometimes, “customers” visit, not for purchases but for information, planning to buy cheaper online. Although OP gets the money-saving angle, what unfolds next leaves him bewildered.

Enthusiastic Hobbyist Is Brimming With Questions

A man enters the store, not particularly old but slightly aged. His eyes find OP the moment he steps inside, and he makes a beeline for him. He’s enthusiastic about a new hobby and is brimming with questions about OP’s products.

20 minutes pass as OP is bombarded with questions. Whenever OP subtly hints at a purchase, the man evades with “Oh, I have to think about it”.

Half an hour into this session, OP tries to step away to help other customers, but the man continues to demand OP’s full attention without showing any interest in buying.

Finally, after a long session of detailed product information, the man leaves empty-handed. Slightly annoying to OP, but acceptable. However, the story doesn’t end there. Two weeks later, the man is back, and the saga resumes.

“Oh, I got it from Amazon. It was like 5% off there!”

The man singles out OP once again, this time needing accessories for a product he bought.

OP inquires who from the team helped him, to which the man reveals, “Oh, I got it from Amazon. It was like 5% off there!”

The same pattern then ensues, with the man asking questions and evading purchase commitment during the busiest time of the year.

The man departs after another lengthy query session, only to return after a week, hunting for more accessories, for the other accessories he ordered online. OP’s patience begins to wear thin.

He Keeps Coming Back From Inside Information

Upon the man’s next visit, OP finally confronts him, explaining that it’s unfair to him and other customers for the man to demand so much attention without intent to purchase.

Other customers need help with actual purchases, and all the information he provides can be found online.

The man responds with a snappy, “Wow. Fine. You won’t see me again.” Left with a bitter aftertaste from the whole saga, OP is left questioning his love for his job.
