In a recent turn of events, former President Donald Trump has found himself embroiled in controversy yet again, this time for showering praise upon the far-right extremist figure, Laura Loomer. Here’s the full story.
“Islam Is a Cancer on Humanity”
Loomer, who once called Islam a “cancer on humanity” and described herself as a “proud Islamophobe” posted a video clip on social media showcasing her interaction with the former president.
The video, captured at the Bedminster location, features Laura Loomer enthusiastically conversing with Donald Trump.
“Hey, everybody. We’re here at Bedminster. I’m with the greatest president ever. President Donald Trump, who is killing it right now,” Loomer said.
“There’s a new poll out, right? You’re crushing it, you’re up over 50 points. And it’s a beautiful day here. Beautiful climb. It’s my first time here at Bedminster,” she added.
“And You’ve Been Really Very Special”
Trump replied, “It’s great to have you. And you’ve been really very special. You work hard and you are a very opinionated lady, I have to tell you that and in my opinion, I like that.”
Then Loomer told the former president that she appreciated his compliments. Trump said, “And I appreciate all of your support and what you’ve been doing, and everybody appreciates your support.”
This public display of camaraderie raised eyebrows given Loomer’s notorious history of inflammatory statements, particularly her overtly Islamophobic remarks that have garnered widespread condemnation.
Critics argue that her extremist views are antithetical to the principles of inclusivity and respect that should define public discourse.
The GOP Is All in on White Supremacy, Racism, and Bigotry
MSNBC broadcaster Mehdi Hasan highlighted the stark contrast between the current situation and past instances where candidates’ controversial statements or associations were met with significant consequences.
Mehdi wrote on Twitter, “This would have disqualified George Bush in 2000 and John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012 but not Trump in this 2024 race. The GOP is all in on white supremacy, racism, and bigotry. It’s beyond the pale.”
Several social media users shared their thoughts on the incident.
One user wrote, “Thanks to Republicans, candidates can say the very worst things & get huge applause,” while another user added, “Because Trump is a white supremacist and you all need to call him what he is.”
“I Question the Ethics of Anyone Who Considers This Depraved Man Qualified To Serve as President”
A third user commented, “White nationalism is thriving as the frontrunners are hanging out with vile people like Laura Loomer.”
“As I’ve said many times, I question the ethics of anyone who considers this depraved man qualified to serve as president,” another user added.
