Since being booked into Fulton County Jail in Georgia on Thursday, former President Donald Trump has generated an astonishing $7 million from his mug shot. This surge in funds follows allegations from authorities that Trump engaged in unlawful attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state.
The First ‘Mugshot’ Former President
Trump is the first former president in U.S. history to have a mugshot taken and rather than being a hindrance, it’s proving to be profitable.
Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign spokesman in the 2023-24 Republican primary said that, on Friday alone, the campaign brought in $4.18 million, which is its highest-grossing day to date.
Trump’s campaign immediately seized the opportunity to capitalize on his high-profile arrest.
Shortly after the former president was booked in jail, his campaign released a slew of new merchandise including t-shirts, bumper stickers, mugs and beer koozies featuring Trump’s historic mugshot.
“ELECTION INTERFERENCE NEVER SURRENDER! DONALDJTRUMP.COM”
The new merchandise provided an instant boost of cash, as the contributions from those who had purchased Trump’s arrest memorabilia or donated money skyrocketed, especially after Trump’s tweet, which read: “ELECTION INTERFERENCE NEVER SURRENDER! DONALDJTRUMP.COM”
Cheung said the new injection of cash had brought the campaign’s fundraising haul over the last three weeks to nearly $20 million as Trump faced two separate indictments over his efforts to keep the Oval Office.
Trump was previously indicted in Washington in early August on felony charges related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election which are often seen as a precursor to the U.S. Capital riot.
Last week, he was indicted along with 18 others by a Fulton County grand jury in his role to overturn Georgia election results.
Trump Continues To Be the Leading Candidate in the Crowded Republican Field
The former president and his co-defendants in Georgia were required to surrender at the Fulton County jail by Friday.
Fulton County was the first to require a mug shot, even though the former president has been indicted three other times this year.
Despite spending tens of millions of dollars on legal defense, Trump continues to be the leading candidate in the crowded Republican field.
He continues to lead his rivals by 30 to 50 percent points, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has built his political profile on culture wars with Disney and the LGTQ community and anti-abortion laws.
Trump Has Raised Over $53 Million During the First Half of 2023
Campaign records show that Trump has raised over $53 million during the first half of 2023 during which his first two criminal indictments became a catalyst for a fundraising spree.
During this time, his political committee’s shelled out at least $59.2 million to more than 100 lawyers and law firms since January 2021.
