Gavin Newsom’s unexpected choice to debate with Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida, is raising eyebrows among some of President Joe Biden’s closest political advisors.
The Upcoming Debate Promises Drama and Intrigue
Scheduled to be moderated by Sean Hannity, the upcoming debate promises drama and intrigue. Insiders suggest it could potentially divert attention away from the main focus of the Biden-Harris campaign.
According to reports from the Daily Mail, confident key strategists within Biden’s circle see the debate as a possible distraction from their central agenda.
Despite endorsing Biden for president earlier on, Newsom has consistently reiterated that he has no aspirations of running for the presidency during this election cycle.
Nevertheless, his decision to debate has ignited a new round of discussions and deliberations among Democratic circles.
There Are Concerns That the Debate Might Inadvertently Boost Desantis
In the Biden camp, there are concerns that the debate might inadvertently boost DeSantis.
Interestingly, DeSantis was initially considered by Biden’s campaign officials to pose a more formidable threat to the incumbent’s re-election chances than even Donald Trump.
Speaking anonymously, an advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris voiced their opinion: “It’s disrespectful. Joe Biden is running with Kamala Harris. That’s the Democratic ticket.”
Another advisor highlighted potential optics issues arising from the debate, especially considering recent disagreements between Harris and DeSantis.
“What He’s Doing Here Is Appropriate for a Surrogate”
The interpretations of these optics range from Biden stepping in to defend Harris when she can’t defend herself to Biden being perceived as eager for attention or a fight.
Not all voices within the Biden administration are skeptical. Some see the debate as a potential opportunity.
They speculate that Newsom, a prominent campaign surrogate for Biden, might be able to weaken DeSantis’ position with a strong performance.
A Biden advisor commented on Newsom’s approach: “What he’s doing here is appropriate for a surrogate.” This advisor commended Newsom for directly engaging with DeSantis and sharing his donor list, which holds significant value in political circles.
The Debate Will Cover Policy Disparities – Immigration, Crime, and Education
Kevin Munoz, a spokesperson for Biden’s campaign, echoed these sentiments, saying, “Governor Newsom is a strong partner and surrogate for the Biden-Harris campaign.”
If the debate occurs, it is expected to cover a wide range of policy disparities. Immigration, crime, and education are among the anticipated topics of discussion.
The idea for the debate originated during an interview with Newsom on Hannity’s show, and DeSantis embraced the challenge through social media.
“Absolutely. I’m Game. Let’s Get It Done. Just Tell Me When and Where. We’ll Do It”
DeSantis enthusiastically responded, saying, “Absolutely. I’m game. Let’s get it done. Just tell me when and where. We’ll do it.”
Newsom’s challenge to DeSantis follows months of high-profile clashes between the two governors, showcasing the political differences that separate the East Coast and West Coast states.
