The government could be coming for your alcohol. The new guidelines may suggest no more than two alcoholic beverages per week. Here’s the full story.
What Is “Heavy Drinking”?
The current alcohol consumption guidelines in the United States recommend a limit of two drinks per day for men and one for women.
It is considered “heavy drinking” for men when they consume more than four drinks in one day or 14 per week.
Women are considered heavy drinkers when they consume more than three or seven drinks per week in one day.
The alcohol consumption guidelines are scheduled to be reviewed and may be getting stricter.
President Biden’s Alcohol Czar
George Koob is the Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), or better known as President Biden’s alcohol czar.
Koob said that the U.S. may soon follow Canada’s guidelines of no more than two beers per week.
Koob has been watching a “grand experiment” going on in Canada. Canada has been exploring the health benefits of limiting alcohol consumption.
According to Koob, there are no physical health benefits from drinking alcohol. “Most of the benefits people attribute to alcohol, we feel they really have more to do with what someone’s eating rather than what they’re drinking,” he said.
“Social Lubricant”
Despite alcohol not having any “health benefits,” Koob did say that it has social benefits. He referred to it as a “social lubricant.”
Koob said he was “pretty sure” the American alcohol consumption guidelines were “not going to go up.” If they go in any direction, it will be “toward Canada.”
Troy Nehls is a Republican Representative from Texas. He referred to a controversial song by Oliver Anthony when he said the “rich men north of Richmond are once again recommending what hard-working Americans should and shouldn’t do.”
Nehls said that Democrats “want to control every aspect of your life” and they have “no business advising ‘guidance’ on alcohol consumption.” Nehls thinks two drinks a week is “a joke.”
The Biden Administration Is Trying to “Put Difficult Regulations on Americans’ Lives”
The beer and alcohol industry also spoke out against the stricter guidelines. Amanda Berger is vice president of science and health for the Distilled Spirits Council. She disagreed with the idea of increasing the alcohol consumption guidelines.
Berger said the current guidelines have been in place “for more than 30 years” and that it was “extremely alarming and inappropriate” for a federal office to suggest changing the alcohol consumption guidelines.
Critics say the Biden administration is trying to “put difficult regulations on Americans’ lives.”
A man from Canada laughed while saying in a video on Twitter that two drinks a week wasn’t “feasible.” He also expressed concern with the government telling him how much he’s allowed to drink in his home, saying, “it isn’t right.”
“We Should All Have the Liberty and Freedom To Choose How Much We Drink…and What Kind of Light Bulbs We Use at Home”
A Twitter account named @CensorThis posted, “We should all have the liberty and freedom to choose how much we drink…and what kind of light bulbs we use at home.”
Alcohol consumption isn’t the only thing Biden has restricted Americans on. The Biden administration put tighter restrictions on light bulbs and gas stoves.
One Twitter user said, “Wake up, America. More control.” While many agree that alcohol may not be good for your body, they don’t think it’s the government’s place to tell Americans how much to drink.
Another Twitter user said, “When your government has an alcohol czar, your government is out of control.” Others say the alcohol czar should be more concerned with the quality of the product, not how much Americans consume.
