Asness is a Jew from Queens, New York, and the son of Carol Asness, a medical educator, and Barry Asness, Manhattan’s assistant district attorney. At age 4, he moved with his family to Roslyn Heights.

In addition to attending B’nai B’rith Perlman Camp, he attended Herricks High School. During his undergraduate studies at Penn, he earned a double major in finance and computer science through the Jerome Fisher Management and Technology Program (M&T). He got his PhD in finance from the University of Chicago in 1994.

Ph.D. in finance, he started AQR in 1998 after working for Goldman Sachs in quantitative research.
