In a recent appearance on CNN, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie did not hold back when addressing former President Donald Trump’s recent insults. Here’s the full story.
Trump vs Christie
The two prominent figures within the Republican Party have been engaged in an ongoing public exchange of words, with Christie taking a more confrontational stance.
Christie, who has been making strides in the New Hampshire primaries, didn’t shy away from the opportunity to respond to Trump’s latest jabs.
He pointed out that Trump tends to react strongly when someone calls out what he perceives as nonsense in his actions and statements.
“He Doesn’t Like When People Stand Up to Him”
“He doesn’t like when people stand up to him and call him out on the nonsense that he’s involved in,” Christie said during the interview with CNN host Wolf Blitzer.
“And I guess he had a bad night last night, maybe at some bad Chinese food or something Wolf. Well, at 11:30 at night, a little indigestion decided to attack me. Keep it coming, Donald!” he added.
He also criticized Trump’s avoidance of debates, highlighting the former president’s absence from the stage.
“Stop Being a Coward”
“And by the way, if he had any guts, he’d get on the debate stage!” Christie said.
“And he’s got things to say about me. Stop hiding behind your social media site, your failed social media site, Donald, and start taking me on directly. Show up. Stop being a coward,” he added.
Christie’s criticism of Trump goes beyond their recent exchanges.
He has been one of the few candidates within the Republican Party willing to challenge Trump as the 2024 election approaches.
“I Wouldn’t Support a Convicted Felon for President”
He took a firm stance during the primary debates saying, “I’m the only one on that stage who was unwilling to raise my hand, aside from Asa Hutchinson, and say I wouldn’t support a convicted felon for president of the United States.”
“We are going to take on Donald Trump directly,” Christie said.
“He doesn’t like it when he’s taken on directly, and he’s confronted,” he added.
However, Trump himself offered reasons for his absence.
“A Thorn in Trump’s Side.”
During an interview with Tucker Carlson, Trump explained that he skipped the first round of debates to avoid being “harassed.”
“Do I sit there for an hour or two hours—whatever it’s going to be—and get harassed by people that shouldn’t even be running for president?” Trump said.
He added, “I’m going to have all these people screaming, shouting questions at me, all of which I love answering, I love doing, but it doesn’t make sense to do them.”
Several social media users shared their thoughts on the incident.
One Twitter user wrote, “Glad that Christie is committed to being a thorn in Trump’s side.”
“Admire His Combativeness”
Another user added, “Trump doesn’t need to debate because he has the nomination locked up.”
A third user commented, “Christie lives for this. This is all he is good for in this race. He throws all the attacks at Trump that people like us wish we could throw at him ourselves.”
A fourth user wrote, “I am no fan of CC but I do admire his combativeness which is generally more substantive than what you get out of MAGA. There is no reason for any Republicans to hold back in the debate about DJT’s cowardice and unwillingness to engage in the political scrum.”
