Calls for President Joe Biden to refrain from seeking re-election are growing louder as polls indicate that most Americans doubt his ability to effectively serve a second term.
“Death Is Imminent”
Recently, a prominent Ohio Democrat, Sharon Sweda, chair of the Lorain County Democratic Party, took a critical stance, going so far as to say, “Death is imminent” regarding President Biden’s health.
Sweda acknowledged that she frequently hears Democratic voters expressing worries about the president’s well-being and age.
She made it clear that her concerns extend beyond President Biden, stating that she believes former President Donald Trump is also too old to pursue another term.
A “Ticking Clock”
Sweda emphasized that the concept of a “ticking clock” applies to everyone but becomes more pressing as individuals reach Biden’s or Trump’s age, which is a matter of concern for voters.
This sentiment was echoed in a recent article in The Washington Post by David Ignatius titled, “President Biden should not run again in 2024.”
Ignatius cited an Associated Press-NORC poll indicating that 77 percent of the public, including 69 percent of Democrats, believe Biden is too old to be effective for another four years.
Health Issues Before the Election
Leaders within the Ohio Democratic National Committee (DNC) expressed concerns that Biden might secure the nomination but could drop out due to health issues before the election.
Many of them would prefer Biden to withdraw from the race now to prevent this worst-case scenario for the party.
An anonymous Ohio lawmaker stated, “The worst-case scenario is we get past the nominating process with President Biden as the nominee, and then he’s no longer able to continue on as the nominee. That’s the nightmare scenario for Democrats.”
Step Aside
Several other Democrats have joined the chorus of concern, urging Biden to step aside and create space for a stronger candidate to represent the party in 2024.
Strategist James Carville emphasized that poll after poll indicates voters’ apprehension about Biden’s candidacy.
Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota voiced his belief that there are other candidates with a better chance of winning and without the actuarial risk that Biden’s age presents.
“Undoing His Greatest Achievement”
In his September 12th piece, Ignatius advised both President Biden and Vice President Harris to withdraw from the race.
He wrote, “It’s painful to say that, given my admiration for much of what they have accomplished. But if he and Harris campaign together in 2024, I think Biden risks undoing his greatest achievement — which was stopping Trump.”
The White House dismisses concerns related to age, asserting that wisdom often accompanies it. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre humorously commented, “80 is the new 40, didn’t you hear?”
Age His Defining Characteristic
Biden’s opponents frequently target him for his frequent gaffes, exaggerations, and false statements.
Some supporters believe that he could regain his lead in the race if he can overcome the growing perception that his advanced age is his defining characteristic.
