Shots were fired at the Republican debate when Desantis made shocking claims about Trump and Pence’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s everything he said about Trump’s tarnished legacy.
“It Was a Mistake, It Should Never Have Happened.”
The latest Republican debate proved to be highly fiery as we saw the introduction of Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor who recently made headlines for removing books on gender from educational libraries.
It didn’t take long for Desantis to start throwing shade at the way former Vice President Mike Pence handled the COVID pandemic, ridiculing him for his lockdown rules, “It was a mistake, it should never have happened.” The governor argued.
“Why Are We in This Mess?”
This is the first time that Desantis has called out the Trump administration for their handling of the pandemic since running for president. However, Desantis failed to mention that he initially followed Trump’s advice, putting the entire state of Florida in lockdown.
Governor DeSantis didn’t hold back at this year’s Republican debate, lambasting former VP Pence for the Trump administration’s Covid policies, “Why are we in this mess?” He asked.
Florida’s Approach
Desantis questioned COVID lockdowns, “A major reason is how this federal government handled COVID-19 by locking down this economy,” he said to the former vice president.
Desantis proudly declares, “In Florida, we led the country out of lockdown,” emphasizing his state’s approach to the pandemic.
The governor made a promise that he wouldn’t allow deep state bureaucrats to impose lockdowns on citizens, showing his commitment to individual freedom.
“You Are Fired!”
Desantis took aim at Doctor Fauci, who played a pivotal role in America’s defense against COVID-19, before making his shocking argument.
“You bring Fauci, you sit him down, and you say, ‘Anthony, you are fired!'” He asserted.
While aimed at Pence, DeSantis’s comments indirectly criticized Trump’s Covid approach, taking shots at their partnership while in office.
Trump Was With Tucker
Where was Trump, you ask? He opted for a more peaceful approach, deciding not to involve himself in the debate but to instead have an interview with disgraced Fox anchor Tucker Carlson that aired at the same time as the debate.
With the former president missing, DeSantis’s comments made everyone intrigued to see the former president’s reaction to the criticism.
Trump’s original critique of DeSantis’s governance fuelled Desantis’ fire, calling the governor of Florida an “average Republican governor with great public relations, who didn’t have to close up his state, but did, unlike other Republican governors.”
No Cuddling Fauci
Trump’s advice to governors was to lockdown their states from non-essential travel to “Slow the spread of the virus,” advice which Desantis followed until changing his mind later on.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s decision to reopen the state in April 2020 was heavily criticized by Trump, who said, “I told the governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, that I disagree strongly with his decision to open certain facilities.”
DeSantis challenged Trump’s alliance with Fauci during his last year in office, questioning his double standards, “You don’t take somebody like Fauci and cuddle him.”
