In a shocking incident that brought issues of gender discrimination to the forefront, Don Geronimo, a well-known radio presenter at WBIG ‘BIG 100,’ was dismissed from his position after making derogatory comments about Emmy-award-winning sports reporter Sharla McBride. Here’s the full story.
She’s a Barbie Girl
The incident occurred during a live broadcast when Geronimo mistook McBride for a “cheerleader”’ and addressed her as “Barbie girl.”
McBride, a popular journalist working for WUSA9, was covering the Commanders training camp when she became the target of sexist comments.
The incident unfolded on-air when Geronimo shouted, “Hey look, Barbie’s here. Hi, Barbie girl,” and went on to question whether she was a cheerleader.
Later in the broadcast, Geronimo again spotted McBride as she was conducting interviews.
“I Thought She Was a Cheerleader”
Geronimo said, “’I think. I think she’s a sportscaster on Channel 9. Or Channel 7.”
“Yeah, She’s familiar,” replied Crash Young, his producer.
“I thought she was a cheerleader,” said Geronimo.
Following the incident, both Geronimo and his producer Crash Young were banned from broadcasting at the Washington Commanders training camp.
Announcing Geronimo’s Termination
The Commanders also took a stand by stopping iHeartMedia from broadcasting on their premises, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful work environment for all.
President of the Washington DC Region for iHeartMedia, Aaron Hyland, released a statement denouncing Geronimo’s comments and announcing his termination.
He emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable and does not align with the company’s core values.
In response to the incident, McBride expressed her gratitude for the support she received from fellow journalists and the Commanders.
And Rightly So!
She acknowledged the significance of the quick action taken and the acknowledgment that such behavior should not be tolerated.
Several social media users expressed their thoughts on the incident.
One Twitter user wrote, “Interesting how the same crowd who shouts ‘cancel culture doesn’t exist’ fires a sports radio host for an offhand comment. Yet, they turn a blind eye when their own politicians demean women on a much larger scale.”
Another User wrote, “Hollywood is really pushing Barbie right now…I recall an actress from daytime years ago that people would say I looked like. There are worse things people can say.”
