Eddie Stobart Biography
Early life
Eddie’s parents were John Stobart and Adelaide Stobart, and he was born in April 1929. During the late 1940s, he established an agricultural business. After becoming Eddie Stobart Ltd in 1970, the business grew into haulage in the 1970s under the guidance of Edward Stobart, his late son, who eventually took over the business.
The company was purchased in 2004 by William Stobart and his brother-in-law, Andrew Tinkler. In the end, the company split into two:
- The Stobart Group
- Eddie Stobart Logistics
Career
The first truck Eddie bought in 1960 was Guy Invincible (a four-wheeler) from a local garage. Having repainted it, he selected the color combination that he liked: Brunswick green and post office red.
After Harrison Ivinson closed down, he took over the slag collection (a steelworks byproduct used for fertilizer), and bought two Ford Thames Traders, painted in the colors he loved and with his own logo.
In November 1970, the business was established into a limited company, Eddie Stobart Ltd, valued at ten thousand pounds, after signing a contract with ICI in 1963 to store basic slag.
The company was run by Eddie Stobart until 1976, when his son Edward took over the transportation division. However, Eddie remained involved, and operated the warehouse until 1989, after which he handed control to his sons William and Edward, remaining non-executive chairman until 1992.
Eventually, the company controlled around 2,500 trucks, making it one of the nation’s largest privately owned transportation and distribution companies.
