In a recent interview at the 2023 PHP Gala, Khabib Nurmagomedov, the former UFC lightweight champion, shared his perspectives on gender, sparking discussions about traditionalism and societal norms. Here’s the full story.
“I See Only Women and Men”
Nurmagomedov, known for his fierce skills and strong cultural ties, discussed his understanding of gender during an engaging conversation with Patrick Bet-David.
When asked about the concept of genders in Russia compared to the ‘few hundred’ recognized in the United States, Nurmagomedov responded, “I see only women and men.”
He said, “There is no between. This is crazy.”
This perspective, consistent with his background, resonated with the audience and garnered applause.
“Two Bathrooms – All Gender, All Gender. “What Is This? Where Do I Have To Go?” It’s the First Time I’ve Seen This”
The fighter then shared an anecdote about a recent experience in California, where he encountered all-gender restrooms in a coffee shop.
He expressed his confusion saying, “Two bathrooms – all gender, all gender. “What is this? Where do I have to go?” It’s the first time I’ve seen this.”
I stared for like, five seconds. “Where is the woman? Where is man?”” he added.
“I knocked on the door; “Is anybody inside?” I don’t know my brother. I grew up in a very traditional place, with a very traditional family,” he said.
“I Am From Big Mountains and We Only Have Two Genders”
Khabib Nurmagomedov’s views are deeply rooted in his upbringing in Dagestan, a region characterized by its strong adherence to traditional values and beliefs.
He proudly identifies himself as a traditionalist and sees his perspective as a product of his environment.
“I am very happy with this. I am from big mountains and we only have two genders,” he said.
The interview also touched on Nurmagomedov’s thoughts regarding women’s participation in combat sports. He said, “For females, I have very good advice, be a fighter at home.”
“And One More Advice, All the Time, Finish Your Husband”
After a brief pause he added, “And one more advice, all the time, finish your husband.”
Several social media users expressed their thoughts on the incident.
One Twitter user wrote, “If you see how hesitant the greatest fighter on earth is to respond to that question… You know we are in big trouble”
“You Can Take Someone Out the Streets, but You Can’t Take the Streets Out of That Person”
Another User wrote, “You can take someone out the streets, but you can’t take the streets out of that person. The same applies to him, he is from a different origin, culture, mindset, and beliefs & that’s okay. Let’s not make MMA political. We care about people’s abilities in the cage, and don’t divide the MMA community.”
