He Said His Homophobic Techno Song Was Hilarious, but Others Found It Offensive. It’s Certainly Opened a Can of Worms. What Do You Think?

In a recent Reddit post, a user found himself in the midst of controversy about whether to take down a homophobic song he made.  Here’s the full story.

His Humorous Video on Homophobia Went Semi-Viral

The Original Poster (OP) made a parody EDM video a few months ago which went semi-viral, drawing attention for its humorous take on homophobia.

The video was an unofficial sequel to David Guetta’s Solves Racism video but with homophobia instead.

The video went viral and encouraged by its reception, OP decided to release the song he made for the video, which sampled Macklemore’s “Same Love” and incorporated a catchy techno beat.

The lyrics playfully revolved around the line “When I was in the third grade, I thought I was gay,” followed by a repetition of “gay, gay, gay, gay” before transitioning into the energetic beat.

His Gay Friend Disapproved

OP shared that the intention behind the song was not to mock the LGBTQ+ community or any other marginalized group but rather to parody the commodification of social justice and highlight the silliness of those who exploit serious issues for personal gain.

However, things took a turn when one of OP’s close friends, who happens to be gay, expressed strong disapproval of the song, perceiving it as “disgusting” and disrespectful to the LGBTQ+ community.

Also, the friend mentioned that the sampling of Martin Luther King Jr.’s words could be offensive to the black community, even though the friend himself was not black.

OP strongly disagreed saying that he was not making fun of these communities.

His Other Gay Friend Found It Funny

He mentioned that his other gay friend loved the song and found it hilarious, and he even heard it played at a Pride event in LA, which surprised him.

But, as someone who is neither gay nor black, OP hesitated to assert his own judgment about what may or may not be offensive to these communities.

The friend’s boyfriend took a strong stance, refusing to speak with OP unless he took down the song.

As a result, OP took to Reddit to ask whether he was wrong for refusing to take down the song.

“There Will Be 12 More Who Think It’s Hilarious”

Redditors were split in their views with one user saying, “I can’t tell you whether or not you are an AH when you provide no way to hear what it was. I have an idea that is because it was really bad because glossing over details is usually done to make the OP look better.”

Another Redditor commented, “Just ignore him. For every person who thinks it’s offensive, there will be 12 more who think it’s hilarious and not offensive at all.”
