A young woman recently asked Redditors for their opinions after she took back a gift to her husband when he ruined her chance at a big promotion. This is her full story.
She’d Finally Got Her Life on Track
OP is a 32-year-old woman who is married to a 34-year-old man. She finally feels like her life is on track after some rough years.
When OP was a teenager, she got into some pretty serious legal trouble. Luckily, she was able to course correct before it was too late.
A few years ago, OP reconnected with her brother, and he helped her get her juvenile record sealed. He also helped her get into college.
Now OP works in a field she loves, and she even met her husband on the job.
And Was Looking Forward to Her Promotion
OP’s employers have been very happy with her work, too, and she has been working toward a promotion and a big raise. In fact, it was pretty much in the bag until her husband tripped over his own tongue.
At a company party over a recent weekend, OP’s husband drank a little too much. He also started talking to the CEO.
During that conversation, OP’s husband told the CEO the full story about her background, including the pieces that were sealed.
On Monday morning, OP’s boss called her into his office and told her that she wasn’t going to get her promotion after all. When she asked why, he told her that he knew all the details about her past, thanks to her husband.
But Her Husband Got Drunk and Told Her Boss About Her Criminal Record
OP’s boss went on to say that the higher-ups didn’t feel comfortable giving her more financial responsibility given what they had learned about her.
Even worse, the boss said that OP had lied when they hired her because she said she didn’t have a record.
While the company decided not to fire her, OP felt like her career was stalled and maybe over. Angry that her husband had betrayed her trust, she confronted him when she got home.
OP’s husband apologized over and over, but he said it was the alcohol talking. He begged her to forgive him, but it was a big argument that left them both feeling terrible.
She Cancelled the Expensive Watch To Save Money
The next morning, OP canceled a large money transfer that she had promised her husband to pay for an expensive watch he wanted to buy.
He collects timepieces, and the purchase was going to be one way they celebrated her promotion.
But with her promotion off the table, OP didn’t feel comfortable spending so much money. Her husband had already committed to the purchase, though, and she told him he’d have to cover it himself.
OP’s husband got angry when he found out about the change of plans, and he told her she was being selfish.
And He Refused To Speak to Her!
OP explained that her financial situation had changed because of her husband’s big mouth. But he said she still had the money in the bank and should have honored her promise.
OP is sticking to her guns, but her husband stopped talking to her because she wouldn’t pay for his watch.
Redditors overwhelmingly support OP and her decision to hang onto her money. They say that the husband has no one to blame but himself.
Did He Do It on Purpose and Out of Jealousy?
Some commenters suggest that OP’s husband may have even sabotaged her on purpose, maybe out of jealousy.
And others suggest that OP consult a labor attorney since her bosses made a decision not to promote her based on information that was supposed to be sealed.
So, what do you think of this story?
Was OP right for pulling her money from the watch purchase, even though that left her husband on the hook?
And do you think OP’s husband told her secrets on purpose, or did they just slip out because of the alcohol, like he said?
