The White House has slammed speaker Kevin McCarthy after he officially initiated an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, accusing him of “abuse of power” and being involved in a “culture of corruption” related to his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings. Here’s the whole story.
No Conclusive Evidence
The impeachment inquiry announcement by Speaker McCarthy stirred intense debate in Washington, as House Republicans spent the past nine months investigating President Biden’s alleged wrongdoing without producing any conclusive evidence.
White House spokesperson for oversight and investigations, Ian Sams, criticized McCarthy for his abrupt change in stance on impeachment, suggesting it was driven by a lack of support within his party.
Sams said, “House Republicans have been investigating the President for 9 months, and they’ve turned up no evidence of wrongdoing. His own Republican members have said so. He vowed to hold a vote to open impeachment, but now he flip-flopped because he doesn’t have support. This is extreme politics at its worst.”
Is the Impeachment Inquiry “Baseless”?
The impeachment inquiry has prompted President Biden to establish an impeachment war room at the White House, where a team of lawyers and aides will strategize and respond to House Republicans’ investigations.
This war room, situated within the White House counsel’s office, consists of legal experts, legislative aides, and communication staff dedicated to mounting a strong defense against the impeachment efforts.
The Biden campaign swiftly labeled the impeachment inquiry as “baseless”. It accused McCarthy of capitulating to former President Donald Trump’s demands.
They portrayed McCarthy’s actions as election-year politics, highlighting his role as a staunch supporter of Trump’s agenda.
House Republicans Have Uncovered Serious and Credible Allegations Into President Biden’s Conduct”
Ammar Moussa, spokesperson for Biden-Harris 2024, said, “As Donald Trump ramped up his demands for a baseless impeachment inquiry, Kevin McCarthy cemented his role as the Trump campaign’s super-surrogate by turning the House of Representatives into an arm of his presidential campaign.”
Some Biden allies have suggested that the impeachment proceedings could work in the president’s favor, energizing Democratic and swing voters as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
However, speaking at the Capitol, McCarthy said, “House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct. Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption.”
“Abuse of Power, Obstruction and Corruption”
“These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption. That’s why today I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,” he added.
Several social media users shared their thoughts on the incident.
One user wrote, “Kevin has no spine. Never did. Never will. He’s Trump’s little monkey.”
Another user added, “This impeachment inquiry will 100% blow up in his face. Why? There is zero evidence of Joe Biden committing a crime.”
“It’s Trumpy That’s Forcing His Hand. He’s Being a Good Little Minion”
A third user commented, “It’s Trumpy that’s forcing his hand. He’s being a good little minion.”
A fourth user wrote, “No one is forcing his hand to call for an impeachment inquiry. When Democrats block investigations by blocking out non classified emails what do you expect for the House Oversight Committee to do? That is their job is to look.”
