Sumter, South Carolina, is the birthplace of Jim Clyburn, the son of Enos Lloyd Clyburn(a fundamentalist minister) and Almeta Dizzley Clyburn(a beautician).
James is a distant cousin to George W. Murray, the organizer of the Colored Farmers Alliance, who served as a Republican member of Congress during the 53rd and 54th Congresses during the 19th century.
James Clyburn studied at Mather Academy (which was later renamed Boylan-Haven-Mather) of Camden, South Carolina, followed by South Carolina State College (now known as South Carolina State University), Orangeburg’s historical black college.
Afterward, he joined Omega Psi Phi and earned his BA in history. Upon graduating from college, Clyburn became a teacher at C.A. Brown High School, Charleston.
Emily Clyburn and Jim Clyburn were married in 1961. President Obama appointed Mignon Clyburn, Clyburn’s oldest daughter, to the Federal Communications Commission. Jennifer Clyburn Reed and Angela Hannibal are his other children.
