In London, a weekly dating event has ignited a heated debate on inclusivity, gender identity, and preserving safe spaces. Here’s what happened.
A Lesbian Speed Dating Event Turned Into a Transphobia Row
A lesbian speed-dating event hosted by Jenny Watson has become embroiled in a transphobia row.
The event, priced at £15 per person, was a beloved gathering for lesbian women seeking to connect with like-minded individuals in the LGBTQ+ community.
However, tensions began to simmer when trans women expressed an interest in participating.
Watson, a 31-year-old town planner and the event’s organizer, said that only “adult human females” could attend the event.
“Last Year, a Person Turned Up Sporting a Purple Latex Outfit… and an Erection”
Last week, Watson took to her website to lay down her rules.
Watson’s decision was not random but was borne out of concerns raised by attendees who felt uncomfortable when Trans women attempted to join the event.
Watson told the media, “Last year, a person turned up sporting a purple latex outfit… and an erection.”
“Another time, a trans woman came into the female toilet and pushed their body at a woman who was upset and told me after. It got me thinking that this isn’t fair on women,” she added.
“If You Are Male, Please Refrain From Coming to the Events; You Are Not a Lesbian”
“If you are male, please refrain from coming to the events; you are not a lesbian,” she wrote, underlining her stance on preserving the unique identity of lesbian women.
Watson added, “Transgender individuals deserve respect. But there is a need for protection of sex-segregated spaces for lesbian women.”
Watson’s intentions, however, were not universally appreciated.
An activist group complained to her employers, accusing her of transphobia and discrimination.
“Lesbians Don’t Have Penises” Is Exclusionary and Perpetuated Harmful Stereotypes
They contended that her insistence on the phrase “adult human females” and her statement that “lesbians don’t have penises” were exclusionary and perpetuated harmful stereotypes.
As the controversy escalated, the Stonegate Group, the proprietors of the College Arms pub, launched an inquiry into where the speed-dating event took place.
The inquiry aimed to clarify whether Watson’s rules were discriminatory or grounded in a legitimate need for maintaining safe and comfortable spaces for lesbian women.
Several social media users expressed their thoughts on the incident.
“They Made Their Beds, Now They Can Lie in It”
One Twitter user wrote, “They have no one to blame but themselves. The LGBs have preached tolerance and acceptance most of my life. They begged for their unholy unions to be called marriage. They made their beds, now they can lie in it.”
Another User wrote, “They are like “How does being transgender affect you” and then here is the answer right here. Everyone is expected to play along?”
