A protective mother and wife took to Reddit for opinions after she laid into her mother-in-law for talking about her husband behind his back. It was a sucker punch of the worst kind. Here is the whole story.
He Comes From a Family of Athletes
OP is a 36-year-old woman who is married to a 36-year-old man. The husband comes from a family of athletes, and he stood out even among them.
Like many kids, OP’s husband tried different sports when he was a kid, and the one that really stuck was boxing.
OP’s husband showed much talent even as a young boxer, and his parents pushed him to do more and more.
By the time he was in high school, OP’s husband was on track to becoming a professional boxer, and his parents were pushing harder and harder.
… And Had a Talent in the Boxing Ring
But the high school coaches were brutal with their approach to training, and OP’s husband started to pull back. He couldn’t put the genie back in the bottle, however.
Coaches from other schools had noticed OP’s husband and his talent in the ring. And so had boxing promoters.
OP’s now-in-laws were frothing at the mouth at the thought of their son going pro. They no doubt had dollar signs in their eyes.
But as high school wound down, OP’s husband finally stood up for himself. He told his parents he was attending college and giving up boxing for good.
He Got a Boxing Scholarship and Put Himself Through College
The first part of that declaration was true, but OP’s husband was able to land a boxing scholarship. So, he had to keep fighting through college.
Once he made that decision, though, OP’s relationship with his parents was never the same. They stopped talking to each other, and his parents wrote him off.
OP started dating her husband right before high school, so she has been there for the whole bumpy ride.
She also watched and supported him as he finished his degree, started his career, and built two successful businesses. OP also considers him to be a wonderful husband and father.
His Relationship With His Family Was Rocky
When he was 30 years old, OP’s in-laws finally contacted their successful son to try and rebuild their relationship.
It’s been a long haul, but OP and her husband built a decent connection with her in-laws over the years.
One day recently, though, OP and her husband took the kids to her in-laws’ house for a family gathering.
The men went out to run some errands, which left OP sitting around talking with her sisters-in-law and mother-in-law.
His Son Loved To Play the Piano
At one point, one of the sisters-in-law mentioned that her son had some piano talent. OP’s mother-in-law told her daughter not to encourage the boy.
The older lady said that by pushing the piano on her grandson, her daughter might drive him to quit entirely and ruin his life. Just like OP’s husband, she said.
OP didn’t know if her mother-in-law forgot she was there or what, but she couldn’t let it slide. She asked how exactly her husband had ruined his life.
One of OP’s sisters-in-law told her she wouldn’t understand.
They Abandoned Him as a Child
That’s when OP snapped and went into a tirade about how poorly her husband’s parents and sisters had treated him, how they had abandoned him.
OP finished by telling her in-laws that her husband was more successful than all of them combined. Then she grabbed her kids and stormed out.
When her husband got home, OP told him about the incident. He understood her reaction and said his might have been even worse if he had been there.
OP knows she was in the right, but now she thinks the relationship with her in-laws is worse than ever. It may even be over.
His Mother Is Bitter and Controlling
Redditors overwhelmingly support OP and her reaction; they think her mother-in-law is bitter and controlling.
Many of them say OP was an outright hero for how she stood up for her husband. They think the couple would be just fine without having his family in their lives.
