In a stunning development to a case that has captivated the public for decades, US police have charged Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former gang leader, with the 1996 murder of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur.
Loss of a Hip-Hop Legend
Shakur, the New York-born hip-hop legend, was tragically gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas at the young age of 25, suffering four gunshot wounds.
Nevada’s grand jury issued a significant indictment against Davis, now 60 years old, charging him with one count of murder with a deadly weapon.
The arrest occurred near Davis’s residence in Las Vegas early on a Friday, with the Las Vegas police (LVMPD) swiftly releasing his mugshot.
A 27-Year Mystery Nears Resolution

Greg Kading, a retired Los Angeles police detective who dedicated years to investigating Shakur’s murder, expressed his lack of surprise regarding Davis’s arrest.

In court, prosecutor Marc DiaGiacomo portrayed Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips street gang, as the “on-ground, on-site commander” who orchestrated Shakur’s murder.
The motive behind this act traces back to a fight between Shakur and Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson, that erupted in a casino shortly before the fatal shooting on September 7, 1996.
Officer Jason Johansson revealed that security camera footage from the casino showed Anderson being assaulted, leading to a retaliatory shooting targeting Shakur when he stopped his car at a red light.

Johansson highlighted Davis’s “own admissions” to media outlets that he was present in the vehicle from which the fatal shots got fired.
In an emotionally charged press conference, Sheriff Kevin McMahill acknowledged the long and painful wait for justice that Shakur’s family had endured over the course of 27 years.
He emphasized that the LVMPD had consistently aimed to hold those responsible for Tupac’s murder accountable.
