Every year, millions of Americans join Progressive to save on auto insurance. It is hard to think that the company has not always been well known despite the fact that it has existed since 1937.
Mid-2000 marked a major turning point for Progressive with the introduction of Flo, a charming Progressive agent who always managed to make us laugh while letting us know about the various discounts Progressive had to offer.
The company has grown by millions of dollars since then and Flo is now one of the industry’s most recognizable faces.

Early years
Stony Point, New York, is the hometown of Stephanie Courtney. She was born on February 8, 1970. Her parents, a high school history teacher and a singer raised her as the youngest of three children. She graduated from Binghamton University in 1992.
As a college student, she studied English and performed in The Crucible as Elizabeth Proctor. During an interview, Stephanie said her dream was to be an entertainer, and that she did not think there was another option for her.
After graduating, Stephanie moved to New York. Meghan Daum, a future author, and columnist, was Stephanie’s roommate. Her job in New York City was as a secretary for Smith Barney Chairman Robert F. Greenhill while taking acting lessons at the Neighborhood Playhouse.
Career
Stand-up comedian Stephanie moved to Los Angeles in order to pursue her dream.
Her sister, Jennifer Courtney, who was working on her acting career, lived with her. They performed their sketch Those Courtney Girls at the Aspen Comedy Festival and in clubs in Los Angeles.
Stephanie took part in the training program of The Groundlings, an improv comedy group. In 2004, she joined the 30-member main company. The theater’s lighting director, Scott Kolanach, met her here and they later married in 2008.
As Stephanie struggled to make ends meet, she worked odd jobs and auditioned for commercials left and right, but she only booked one a year-until 2008. She landed the role of Flo for Progressive Insurance in the same year.
Stephanie Courtney, who earns $1 million annually from the Flo campaign, has over 5 million likes on her Facebook fan page and the campaign is still going strong after several years.
“Flo Progressive” Salary
Flo, a character in Progressive commercials, earns Stephanie Courtney $1 million per year. In most cases, an actor who has played a character for a long time negotiates a direct contract outside of the pay scales of SAG-AFTRA.
A spokesperson is also paid a pay bump, receives residuals from current commercials, and is excluded from taking on any other jobs as a result. Stephanie Courtney probably earns at least $2 million per year when you add it all up.
