A young woman took to Reddit after she caused her friend to be late for an important job interview. It was all because of an argument over seatbelts. Here is the whole story.
Landing an Interview
OP is a 22-year-old woman who recently met a new friend in a hiking group.
OP’s new friend is a 23-year-old woman who has been looking for a new job over the last month or so. She already has a gig, but she hopes to find one that pays more.
After submitting countless job applications, OP’s friend finally landed an interview. But there was a problem. As the friend’s interview approached, her car broke down, and she had to put it in the shop.
Hitching a Ride
With no wheels, she asked OP if she could give her a ride to the interview. OP was happy to help and agreed to give her new buddy a lift.
On the day of the interview, OP drove to her friend’s apartment building as planned. The friend hopped in, and the two women started out.
But as OP was pulling away, she realized her friend wasn’t wearing her seatbelt. Thinking she had just forgotten, OP reminded the other girl to buckle up.
She Never Wore a Seatbelt
It was no mistake, though, and the friend told OP she never wore a seatbelt. Her uncle had died in a car explosion when he couldn’t get out of his seatbelt.
OP told her friend that she was sorry for her loss and felt terrible that happened to her, but that she insisted all her passengers wear a seatbelt.
The friend stood her ground, though, and told OP she wasn’t going to buckle up. She said she’s a grown woman and can do what she wants.
A Stand Off
OP agreed with that sentiment and said that she’s also a grown woman. And she refuses to drive around with anyone who is not wearing a seatbelt.
OP told her friend that she couldn’t live with herself if they had an accident and the friend got hurt (or worse) because she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
To that, the friend replied that the interview location was less than 15 minutes away. The chances OP would have an accident in that time were slim.
The Driver Calls the Shots
Tired of arguing, OP put her foot down and delivered her bottom line. She was not going to move the car an inch until her friend buckled up.
OP also told her friend that she should call an Uber if she didn’t like those terms.
That made OP’s friend furious, and she got out of the car and called OP a few choice names. After that, OP just drove off.
Later that day, OP’s friend texted her to say that she ended up being late for the interview. She lost the job because of OP, she said.
Claimed Insensitivity to Her Trauma
OP pushed back and pointed out that it was the girl’s own fault she was late. All she had to do was put on her seatbelt, and everything would have been fine.
But the friend said OP was being insensitive to the trauma she experienced when her uncle died. She also noted that OP is controlling.
Now, OP feels terrible that her new friend missed out on a job that might have been good for her. She wonders if she should have just driven her to the interview seatbelt or not.
She Made the Safe and Right Call
Redditors overwhelmingly support OP’s decision not to move the car until her friend buckled up.
Many of them point out that not only was OP protecting her buddy, but she was also avoiding a ticket since it’s illegal in most locations for front-seat passengers not to wear their seatbelts.
