“The Saddest Thing”: Interviewing President Biden Was “Heartbreaking” Says Former ESPN Anchor Sage Steele

Former ESPN anchor Sage Steele made an appearance on Bill Maher’s podcast recently and talked about why interviewing President Biden was “heartbreaking” for her. She revealed that Biden “couldn’t finish his sentences” at times and “struggled” to come up with answers to her questions.

The “Saddest” Interview of Sage Steele’s Career?

Sage Steele spent more than 15 years serving as a SportsCenter anchor at ESPN. She joined The Worldwide Leader in Sports back in 2007 before recently parting ways with the company, and during her time at the network, she conducted countless interviews, with everyone from athletes to celebrities to the occasional politician.

But while speaking with Bill Maher on his “Club Ransom” podcast this week, Steele revealed that an interview with President Joe Biden may have been the “saddest” interview she ever did while with ESPN. It took place in March 2021 just prior to MLB’s Opening Day.

She Claims President Biden “Struggled” During Their Interview

Steele told Maher that Biden “couldn’t finish his sentences” during the interview and “struggled” to stay on topic. She also claimed that Biden “trailed off” at times. Additionally, Steele alluded to the fact that Biden didn’t seem to know who he was going to be speaking with prior to their interview and that he tried to break the ice with her by awkwardly describing his time as a football player at the University of Delaware.

“He started to tell football stories of his greatness,” Steele recalled. “He goes, ‘I have the best hands.’ What do you say to that?… And here’s the saddest thing — his voice just trailed off. He said, ‘I was good,’ and then he went silent, and he goes…’Uh, never mind.’”

She Definitely Isn’t a Fan of President Biden

Steele was quick to point out to Maher that she is not a fan of President Biden in the slightest. She referred to him as a “terrible President.” She also readily admitted that she didn’t vote for him in the 2020 Presidential Election, and she suggested that, at 80, Biden is too old and out of touch to be the “leader of the free world.”

She Does, However, Have a Heart and Feel Bad for Him

Although Steele might not be a Biden supporter, she told Maher that she did genuinely feel bad for him following their interview. “Forgot about politics,” she said. “I don’t care. I didn’t vote for him. However, that made me sad. The human aspect of what we’re witnessing right now, to me, is heartbreaking.”

She Sends One More Shot in Biden’s Direction

Steele may have softened her stance on President Biden ever so slightly at times while speaking with Maher. But she couldn’t resist the urge to sneak in one last shot at him after expressing concern for his health.

She made a not-so-subtle reference to Trump’s claims about Biden hiding in his basement in the months leading up to the 2020 Presidential Election. “I thought it was so sad because I realized that’s why he was in the basement during the whole election cycle,” she said.

Bill Maher Appears to Agree With Her

Maher let Steele do most of the talking on his podcast. But just days before it was released, he voiced his own concerns about President Biden and his immediate future. On his HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher, he called on Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential election and referred to him as the “only Democrat who can lose to [Donald] Trump.”

Maher also compared Biden to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who infamously decided not to retire when Barack Obama was President, which eventually allowed Trump to replace her with a conservative justice.

“Someone has to convince President Biden that if he runs again, he’s going to turn the country back over to Trump and go…down in history as Ruth Bader Biden,” Maher said, “the person who doesn’t know when to quit and so does great damage to their party and their country.”
