Facing 13 felony counts related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, Trump says he is innocent. Here’s the full story.
Trump Turned Himself In
On the night of August 24, the 77-year-old former president turned himself in to Fulton County police and was subsequently arrested and booked.
Speaking to reporters for the first time after his arrest, Trump expressed his dismay at the situation, deeming it “A very sad day for America.”
He said, “This should never happen. If you challenge an election, you should be able to challenge an election. I thought the election was a rigged election, a stolen election, and I should have every right to do that.”
The charges against Trump include a range of offenses, such as racketeering, solicitation or violation of oath by a public officer, conspiracy to commit forgery and false statements, and filing false documents.
Challenging Election Results Is a Fundamental Right in a Democratic Society
The charges stem from his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia, a state that played a pivotal role in the presidential race.
Throughout his statement, Trump consistently emphasized that challenging election results is a fundamental right in a democratic society.
He justified his actions by citing the need to ensure election integrity and prevent dishonest elections.
By referencing figures like former First Lady Hillary Clinton and former Georgia representative Stacey Abrams, Trump tried to highlight what he perceives as a pattern of election challenges by public figures across the political spectrum.
Trump said, “As you know, you have many people that you’ve been watching over the years doing the same thing, whether it’s Hillary Clinton or Stacey Abrams or many others. When you have that great freedom to challenge, you have to be able to, otherwise you can have very dishonest elections.”
“I Did Nothing Wrong, and Everybody Knows It”
“What has taken place here is a travesty of justice. We did nothing wrong, I did nothing wrong, and everybody knows it,” he added.
Trump’s fervent claims of innocence resonated with his base of supporters, many of whom lined up outside the Fulton County jail to protest ahead of his arrest.
“I’ve never had such support, and that goes with the other ones too,” he said.
“What they’re doing is election interference. They’re trying to interfere with an election. There’s never been anything like it in our country before. This is their way of campaigning, and this is one instance, but you have three other instances. It’s election interference. So I want to thank you for being here,” he concluded.
“That’s What All Criminals Say, Just Ask Any Inmate”
Several social media users expressed their thoughts on the incident.
One user wrote, “That’s what all criminals say, just ask any inmate”
Another user added, “He did everything imaginable unlawfully. He needs to be locked. His followers don’t need to hear his lies.”
