During the 80s, Umphrey gained a reputation dealing with asbestos cases, and the 90s saw him target the biggest fish of them all: Tobacco.

As the state’s representative in a lawsuit against Philip Morris, Umphrey, and his other four partners spent $40–50 million pursuing a contingency fee of 15%. In the end, there was a $17.3 billion award and a $3.3 billion payout from the tobacco companies to the group of five on December 11, 1998.
