While working at Microsoft, Barton got the idea to fund Zillow, realizing the real estate sector would undergo a significant transformation. Zillow was incorporated in December 2004, and the company launched its website in February 2006. 

Spencer Rascoff became the company’s CEO in 2010, while Barton continued to serve as Executive Chairman. The Zillow Offers service was introduced in April 2018 for on-demand purchasing of homes. Barton returned to the company as CEO in February 2019, leading the transition process.
